How can we increase the odds?
As a research fellow at the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, I've been taking my best swing at these questions — together with some of the best thinkers I've ever had a chance to talk to and work with. You can see a basic summary of our answers (it's a video of a talk I gave at the Singularity Summit; the talk summarizes many peoples' work); you can also read a short written version.

Probabilistic forecasting web app:
I was part of a team that built The Uncertain Future, a web application that asks you questions and then, after adding and multiplying for you, lets you know when AI is likely to arrive "according to you". It is currently in beta.

I also attempted a sequence on Newcomb's Problem and decision theory. It is less coherent than my other writing, largely because the concepts are less settled ("if we knew what we were doing, we wouldn't call it research"), and because I ended up dropping the sequence in the bustle around the Singularity Summit.

Introductory reading on AI and existential risk:
- Reducing long-term catastrophic risks from artificial intelligence. A short article explaining our aims at the Singularity Institute.
- Dinosaurs, Dodos, Humans?, by Nick Bostrom. A short, simple article noting that there seem to be sizable human extinction risks.
- Existential risk: Analyzing Human Extinction Scenarios and Related Hazards, by Nick Bostrom. A more detailed version of the same analysis.
- Artificial Intelligence and Global Risk, by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Reviews what many think is the largest long-term risk to humans and to other things we humans care about — and what seems also to offer the largest potential gain.
- The Singularity: A Philosophical Analysis, by David Chalmers. Another good introduction.
- Cognitive Biases Potentially Affecting Judgment of Global Risks. Reviews why abstract, untestable domains in general, and global catastrophic risks in particular, are damn hard to think carefully about. Highly recommended.

- Givewell and Giving What We Can's analyses of how most charity money is spent, and of how to make a much larger difference.
Existential risks in general, and Singularity scenarios in particular, are young fields. If you want to contribute to research, it is a good idea to not only read the rather small literature within these fields (much of which is listed above), but also to develop rigorous thinking skills, and add tools to your mental toolbox, by developing expertise within computer science, physics, mathematics, analytic philosophy, or a similar field.
Also, since human extinction risks are a field in which it is unusually difficult to avoid nonsense, it is worth studying common human error patterns and methods for reducing their impact. I've also found this literature personally fascinating; it's taught me a whole new notion of what "thinking" can be. The community blog Less Wrong (especially Eliezer's core sequences, from its blog archives) offers a useful entry point into this literature.

If you’re looking for interesting research tackling “big picture” questions, or if you want a high-impact way to help many folks, existential risk reduction work is something to consider.
In particular, you might wish to:
- Email me. Being in conversation is the fastest way to get up to speed, and the best way to ensure that your plans make sense in light of others’ knowledge. New contacts are always welcome, and a two-line “hi” email is fine; you can reach me at anna at singinst dot org.
- Read background material, and, with that as a starting-point, try to form your own picture of existential risks. What poses the biggest risks? Where are they concentrated? What are the most promising avenues for intervention today? As you read, put your thoughts out there for others’ critiques and responses, either online (Less Wrong discussion is a good place for this) or by starting an in-person study/research group.
- Connect with others who have similar aims, online or in person; strategy grows best in conversation with others. If you’d like to find others in your city, send me an email; there are folks with these interests in many major cities.
- Consider what sort of involvement you might like, long term. Direct research, organizational roles, and donation (while you earn money doing whatever you’re best at, or whatever you enjoy most) are all worth considering. All three happen best in community; for example, if you’re interested in long-term donation (whether you’re on the job market or still a student), the Existential Risk Reduction Career Network can be a helpful source of career boosts.
